Oriana House President/CEO James Lawrence Receives
International Award
Oriana House President and CEO James Lawrence is honored to be the 2003
recipient of the Arthur McDonald Leadership and Service Award. The International
Community Corrections Association (ICCA) awards this recognition to an
individual who has demonstrated a commitment to community-based corrections and
who has used the ICCA as a vehicle to support his or her goals. ICCA represents
more than 250 private agencies operating more than 1,500 residential and
community alternative programs throughout the world. There are an additional
1,000 individual members. ICCA President Don Evans presented the award to
Lawrence this week at ICCA's annual conference. Evans credited Lawrence's
leadership, dedication, commitment, and forward thinking as reasons why Lawrence
is deserving of this award. Lawrence has demonstrated expertise in the field of
community corrections. He has served as President and CEO of Oriana House since
1981 when it became incorporated as a private, non profit community corrections
and chemical dependency treatment agency. Under Lawrence's leadership and
direction, Oriana House grew from a single program to an agency that offers more
than 20 programs in community corrections and chemical dependency treatment.
Lawrence served as president of ICCA from 1992-1995. For more than a decade, he
has chaired ICCA's Justice Committee. Lawrence's experience has been recognized
at local, state, and national levels. He has served on the Governor's Committee
on Prison and Jail Overcrowding and is a member of the Advisory Board of the
Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission. He has offered insight and testimony to the
state and federal legislature. Lawrence is active in several correctional
associations, such as ICCA, American Correctional Association (ACA), and the
Ohio Community Corrections Association (OCCA). He is a former recipient of the
Ohio Community Corrections Organization Simon Dinitz Award for his outstanding
contributions as a community corrections professional. Lawrence has served on
the Board of Governors of the ACA and was the ACA Board Liaison for the
Residential Community Corrections Committee, the Non-Residential Community
Corrections Committee, the Victims Committee and the Restorative Justice
Committee. He has served on the ACA Community Corrections and the ACA Ethics
Committee. He currently serves on the ACA Legislative Committee. Lawrence is
also active in justice issues with the National Association of Counties (NACO)
and the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce. Lawrence has also served the
community through his many volunteer efforts with local agencies including the
Battered Women's Shelter, the Catholic Commission, the Peninsula Library and
Historical Society, and Towpath Preschool in Peninsula. Lawrence lives in
Peninsula with his wife and three children.
