Growing Wellness and Teamwork at the McDonnell Center Community Based Correctional Facility

A Wellness Garden at the McDonnell Center Community Based Correctional Facility should be thriving this summer thanks to the dedication and teamwork of clients and staff.

Staff members have been collecting pots, crates, and other supplies to launch and sustain the garden project. Clients cleaned and swept the outdoor area while also learning how to repurpose milk crates into planters. They planted potatoes and onions and have been carefully monitoring and watering them as they grow.

During a later gardening session, what began with three clients planting quickly expanded into a group of 12 participants, with several others coming outside to observe and support the effort. Together, clients planted cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, peppers, and dill. Flowers were also planted in pots, and seeds were added so clients could watch the growing process from start to finish. In addition to planting, clients received education on soil and composting as well as the benefits of companion planting.

“I was impressed with how the clients helped each other and learned from one another,” said Clinical Coordinator Lindsey Lambillotte. “They are eager to continue caring for the plants and excited to see how they grow.”

The Wellness Garden project offers numerous benefits. Clients are learning how to garden in small spaces using affordable, everyday materials. They are also gaining hands-on experience in maintaining plants through watering, pruning, and ongoing care. The project encourages healthy eating habits while also highlighting how gardening can provide financial savings and a rewarding hobby.
